Oxford dictionary defines education as an “enlightening process”, “the process of receiving and giving
systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.” For the overall
development and maturity of a person, education holds an important place in our
lives. When it comes to college education
it becomes all the more essential to select the right course and right form of
learning. In
the contemporary times, when people have really become busy with tight
schedules, pursuing regular classes is well-nigh impossible. Correspondence
course or distance education has really come in handy in such cases. Correspondence courses started
in 1728., when Caleb Phillips, a teacher, posted an ad in the Boston
Gazette newspaper that he is searching for students who are willing to
be receive weekly lessons. Correspondence courses break the barriers of
distance by providing content that is beneficial, cheap, and very useful. Although
it flexible and easy, distance learning requires a lot more effort to complete
it successfully.
Advent of newer and more
advanced technologies, has made distance learning easier and faster. Nowadays,
instructors can send the module (in PDF format) to the students through e-mail.
The students, on the other hand, can send their course works through the same
medium. The course material is regularly updated and improved, the messenger,
chat facilities, and other applications and social networking sites have made
interaction with the teachers and students much more convenient. This enables students
under the same course to have group discussions about difficult topics. More
people in all age groups are getting the benefit of being educated and are
acquiring more degrees because of distance learning courses. As Diana Oblinger
in her book “THE NATURE AND PURPOSE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION” rightly pointed out that
distance learning can be a catalyst for a more competitive and innovative
market for education.
